A while back we told you that production was gearing up on Scream 4. Wes Craven is heading back to Woodsboro for a fourth time, and he’s bringing the rest of the surviving main characters along with him. Hopefully, this will be a return to form for Craven, who hasn’t made a worthwhile film since the Scream series’ last installment in 2000.
Joining Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette is an all-star cast of hotness, including, but not limited to: Hayden Panettiere (Heroes), Anna Paquin (True Blood), Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Emma Roberts (It’s Kind of a Funny Story), Marley Shelton (Planet Terror), and Allison Brie (Mad Men, Community).
And it’s got Anthony Anderson, too. So there’s that for all you Kangaroo Jack fans.
I always loved the Scream movies. They possessed the one thing sorely lacking in today’s studio horror fare: intelligence. As a horror fan, I always appreciated how the real cinematic history of the slasher genre was incorporated into the series. It was that sly, wink-and-a-nod style of humor that had horror aficionados, film critics, and mainstream audiences singing the original film’s praises. Not to mention it collectively scared the crap out of us and made perky blonde girls forever fearful of preparing Jiffy-Pop while home alone.
Though the series began to fizzle out towards the end of the original trilogy, I’m hoping that Scream 4 will have something smart to say when reflecting on the evolution (devolution?) of the genre over the last decade. Check out the trailer below and decide for yourself. Scream 4 hits theaters on April 15, 2011.
